travel news - Cyprus Opens New Airport
Cyprus opens new airport
November 20 2008
Cyprus' new Pamphos airport opened to travellers this week in readiness for the coming winter holiday season, according to Lebanon's Daily Star.
With a new passenger terminal that cost 127 million euros (£107 million), the new airport will be able to handle 2.7 million passengers every year.
The new airport will in fact only be the second largest on the island, an indication of how popular Cyprus has become as a tourist destination.
French contractor Hermes, which built the new Paphos airport, is also working on extending the much larger Lanarca airport, which will be able to welcome nine million passengers a year when it is completed in November 2009.
Hermes Airports spokesman Adam Aspris told Cypriot state radio: "This is the crowning of a monumental effort and at the same time it signals a new era for airports in Cyprus."
Cyprus is not only a popular summer holiday destination; it also welcomes UK tourists over the winter period.
This year the resort town of Ayia Napa celebrates Christmas with a series of events showcasing the island's traditions and culture.
